| Creswell,
officially founded in 1874, existed as a community and was known as Cool Springs as early as 1826.
The community's postmaster named the town for John A. Creswell, the U.S.
Postmaster General under President Ulysses S. Grant. For
many years the town served as an important shipping area for farm
commodities. Steamboats were common on the Scuppernong River until rail
service arrived.
Today, the town and surrounding area are known for several attractions including two historic churches— St. Davids, built in 1803 by the Rev. Charles Pettigrew, first elected Episcopal bishop in North Carolina, and Concord Primitive Baptist, located between Creswell and Cherry and the county's only remaining Primitive Baptist Church, organized in 1810 and preserved by a local group of friends and descendants of original members. Pettigrew State Park and Somerset Place attract visitors from around the country. The Davenport Homestead features the homeplace of Daniel Davenport, first senator of Washington County. This simple, 12 x 20-foot home and several outbuildings on the site demonstrate what life was life for citizens in the 1700s and 1800s. Each year on the first Saturday in June, Davenport Heritage Day offers a lively celebration drawing several hundred people to the site for hands-on exhibits of old-time homestead skills. The Scuppernong River offers boaters, fishermen and birders a beautiful spot to spend a quite day. If roaring excitement is what you're looking for you'll find it at The Outer Banks Speedway. This excellent drag racing facility has plenty of amenities to make it a great place for the whole family. Other Creswell sites and businesses include:
