Davenport Heritage Day

n annual celebration is held on the first Saturday of June. The grounds and buildings come alive with activity including demonstrations of old-time skills like shingle making, hog killing, cow milking, molasses squeezing, cotton seeding, peanut poppings, corn huskings, weaving, quilting, making featherbeds, washing clothes and even making liquor. Live music, barn dancing, storytelling, singing and good 'ol downhome food round out the day.

BYOC (bring your own chair) and your genealogical records to share, if you have any. If you don't, come on down and find out who you're kin to. Some of the families represented so far each year are Arnold, Bateman, Long, Warrington, Ambrose, Clifton, Furlough, Haire/Hare, Holmes, Oliver, Phelps, Spruill, Woodley and some names long gone. Or just enjoy the eatin', singin', and fun of finding out how easy life has gotten!  Hours are usually 10 to 4, but check local listings or call to check for changes.
